Where the Red Fern Grows book review for the weight room book club
Where the Red Fern Grows is the first of the novels within The Weight Room Book Club. I chose this book because it reminds me of childhood. Not because my childhood involved any similar stories of hunting or the kind of adventures found in the book, but because the story as a whole is one of learning, growth, pain, and understanding which I think we can all relate to.
The story of a young boy who wants something and does whatever he has to to get it carries a message that as adults we can learn from: set a goal and do what it takes to achieve it.
We don't have a ton of that anymore in today's world, especially as we convince kids that they're victims, they are entitled to anything they want, and they don't have to win to receive a reward.
The story also reminds us that pain can teach us great lessons if we let it. But, we have to be willing to have experiences, put it on the line, and possibly experience that pain in order to learn and grow.
This book tells a simple story with complex emotions and messages. Read it, reread it, and read it to your kids.
