It's no secret that a person's health is affected by more than just one or two variables. There are probably a million factors both large and small that contribute to our overall health including genetic factors, environmental factors (air and water quality amoung others), lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep, as well as cultural factors that impact our mindset and beliefs. These are all umbrellas that contain many many factors within such as exercise could be broken down into cardiovascular, what kind of cardiovascular, etc.
When you change one of these variables, your overall health will change in some way even if it's not necessarily for the better or worse. For example, if you do everything the exact same but you start lifting heavy weights for less reps, your health will change- along with your fitness.
On episode 148 of The Weight Room, Katie Carlson joins and shares how these and other factors play a role in health and how she as a diet and nutrition coach has to think about these when helping a client. It's not just as simple as saying "let's cut carbs" or "let's eat more salad" to help someone reclaim or maintain there health through diet and nutrition. It takes a lot of trial and error, seeing what works, how much of each micro and macronutrient, how much water, meal timing, number of meals per day, and so on. And then you have to factor in things like can this person eat a given thing during the day because they work outside, or do they have an existing health problem, are they allergic to foods, do they have religious or cultural reasons for not eating certain foods, and so on. When it comes to changing someone's diet to make it healthier and sustainable, you have to be with that person every step of the way. Katie Carlson also shares her own journey of health and diet and nutrition.
