May Book Club Recap: 12 Rules for Life

This is a recap of the book 12 Rules for Life by Dr. Jordan Peterson

It’s not the belief in the belief system that makes people always yearn for it. The belief system makes the world under stable to the people within it. Ie- capitalism vs communism

Rule 1: stand up straight with your shoulders back.

- There's a lot to say about this but the main takeaway for me is the psychological response due to a physiological pattern. Also, the way we hold ourselves is communicated greatly to the world around us.

Rule 2: treat yourself like you’re someone responsible for helping

- This feels like a largely forgotten rule in today's world. Whether that's people refusing to work or even refusing to work hard, that makes a massive negative impact on society as a whole. It puts those who are working or working hard under more pressure to keep the machine running.

Rule 3: make friends with those people who want the best for you.

- That means they get to demand the best from you. This rule speaks heavily on the role of accountability and the relationship between accountability, motivation, and getting offended with the truth.

Rule 4: compare yourself to who you were yesterday and not who someone else is today.

- Don’t be envious of people who have “it better.” Social media plays a big role in how we see our own lives (for some or even most of the people on it), but it shouldn't. The highlight reel of social media is not real life. Those posts and stories aren't telling the full story but we see that person as having a perfect life with no problems. Instead, take a deeper look at yourself, do good each day, and appreciate growth on a daily basis.

Rule 5: don’t let your children do anything that lets you dislike them.

- if you dislike them then other people will. That will make the world harder for them. Parenting has become more of free reign for kids and letting them "express" themself when in reality it's a lack of discipline that leads to bad behavior, disrespect and an over-inflated self importance. NOBODY likes that kind of person.

Rule 6: put your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.

- bind your ambitions with humility. That doesn’t mean you can’t help others it just means you can’t help others until you’ve helped yourself.

Rule 7: do what is meaningful and not what is expedient.

- Fitness is a perfect example of this. It's not quick or easy but it brings value to your life.

Rule 8: tell the truth or at least don’t lie.

- When you lie, you corrupt your own perceptions. When you corrupt your own perceptions then you can’t rely on yourself.

- you cant do what is meaningful if you’re lying.

Rule 9: assume the person you’re listening to knows something you don’t.

- it’s a mark of recognition of your own ignorance.

- What’s more important, what you know or what you don’t know? Why appreciate what you don’t know? If your life is perfect, then it doesn’t matter, but If life could be better, what you don’t know matters a lot.

Rule 10: be precise with your speech.

- also think about this rule as “ask and you shall receive”

- The more you specify,

Rule 11: don’t bother children when they’re skateboarding

- You’re interfering with a child learning about getting hurt, taking chances, learning that the world is dangerous but the only way to participate is to just do if.

- it’s a statement of courage. An encouraged kid isn’t a sheltered kid.

- The world is hard but there’s something in you that is up for the challenge.

Rule 12: pet a cat when you encounter one on the street.

- what do you do when you don’t know what to do?
