When it comes to elite athletes, Olympians are the top of the top. In most cases, they dedicate their lives to one or two Olympic Games which could be 10 to 20 years or longer of skills training, mental training, strength and conditioning, and more. To top it off, most of these athletes are not paid what you would think for being among the best at what they do, so much of it is passion for what their sport is.
Austrian bobsledder, Ben Maier, is no exception. He has put years and years into his craft and even though he is lucky enough to have competed in the Winter Olympics, it is no easy feat as he has much more responsibility than the average athlete. He has been responsible for raising money, finding sponsors, managing schedules, and building a team that works well together. On episode 75 of The Weight Room he shares the athlete side, the management side, his journey getting into bobsledding, some of the risks of the sport, how they gain an advantage and how some do it illegally. We also talk about the mental side of the sport which was extremely valuable to hear how the highest level athletes do it. He mentioned several different mental techniques he uses, books he reads, and how he keeps his head of straight while in high pressure environments.
